Wantage Leisure Centre Supports Accessible Swimming with New Hoist

Disabled adults and children in the Oxfordshire town of Wantage are enjoying the benefits of swimming thanks to a Handi-Move pool lift that has recently been installed by leading pool lift supplier Dolphin Mobility.

The Wantage Leisure Centre had previously used a hydraulic lift which staff had to pump and was described by one user as uncomfortable and nerve-racking! Andrew Pye, Duty Manager explained: “Whilst the old lift served a purpose, the new Handi-Move pool lift is fantastic. We have received extremely positive feedback from both staff and users, who have commented on the ease with which the pool lift can be operated and how comfortable and safe it feels when being hoisted in and out of the water.”

Mobile Pool Hoist

The Handi-Move pool lift can be disconnected from its ground socket at the touch of a button and easily folded by one person, allowing it to be stored away when not in use. This eliminates both the risk of damage and the lift being an obstacle to other pool users. Additional features include a hard wearing, lightweight steel frame, emergency stop button and rechargeable battery operated controls.

Hoisting a Person Into a Pool

Lifting the user into the water requires four simple steps: place the lift over one of the ground sockets and press the engage button prior to raising the arm to the required height, attach the correct Handi-Move accessory, (in this case a seat sling), lift the user and once in the air, manually rotate the arm over the water and lower them in.

Andrew continued: “I believe that swimming is a life skill that should be available to everyone regardless of their disability and the Handi-Move pool lift has ensured that in Wantage we can now offer a swimming experience to all.”

Most clients use conventional looped slings but Hand-Move also make a unique body support system for even quicker transfers. The transfer device shown in these images is called the seat sling which is also a product unique to the Handi-Move range of hoists.
